What is an Earthquake?
An earthquake is a weak to violent shaking of the ground produced by the sudden movement of rock materials below the earth’s surface. There are two types of earthquakes: Tectonic earthquakes are produced by sudden movement along faults and plate boundaries. Earthquakes induced by rising lava or magma beneath active volcanoes is called volcanic earthquakes.
COMMON EFFECTS OF AN EARTHQUAKE
Ground Shaking
iIt is used to describe the vibration of the ground during an earthquake. Ground shaking is caused by body waves and surface waves.
Landslides
These are triggered by strong ground motions. These includes a range of ground movement, such as rock falls, failure of slopes, and debris flows.
Tsunamis
These are the waves caused by earthquakes. Waves do not suddenly increase height but build up higher heights as the depth of the ocean decreases.
